The yachting industry lost a friend the other day with the passing of Capt. Bill Astras. Formerly at the helm of M/Y Norwegian Queen, Astras spent the majority of his life living and working in Boca Raton, starting in the marine industry as owner/operator of Boca Marine, a local dive shop that transformed into a marine store over the years that sold everything from boats to screws.

He took on the opportunity to run a 54-foot Bertram sport fish, which lead his career to a 106-foot Westship, a 132-foot Westship, and on to the 164-foot Trinity Norwegian Queen, working his entire career for one family.

“He helped and touched many lives over the years,” says his son, Randy Astras. “You never worked ‘for’ Capt. Bill, you worked ‘with’ him.”

He leaves behind Mary, his wife of 47 years, two sons, David and Randy, and four grandchildren as well as his belief in keeping the yachting tradition alive. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations to the UF Health Shands Kidney Transplant housing and gas fund be sent in care of Stephan J. Moore, 1600 Archer Rd, Gainesville, Florida 32610-0223. A celebration of life will be held in the near future. If you would like details as they are arranged, please email rastras@att.net.
