By Chef Hector Lopez, Director of Provisioning, The Grateful Palate Provisions

As the winter yachting season begins and our attention shifts to yacht shows and charters, details matter now more than ever.  For this post, I’d like to shift gears from food and briefly touch upon properly dressing a table and why it is so important.  As the saying goes, you only have one chance to make a first impression.  The table sets the tone for the meal.  Be it casual or formal, the table setting is a personal expression that excites guests and can be a great conversation piece.

Here are a few hints for an impressive table presentation:

  1. Create a unique table by blending different sources.  Plates, glasses and flatware with similar colors but from different sets can be combined to create dramatic results.  Should you choose to go with everything from the same set, mix it up by adding distinctive placemats and napkin rings.
  2. Find fun ways to add color to the table using chargers, unique cloth napkins, flowers or fun place cards.
  3. Do not put scented candles on the table.  Scents can interfere with the flavors of the food that you are serving.
  4. Be sure to have the table ready when guests arrive.
