She reportedly sustained multiple injuries and was taken to Port Antonio Hospital, where she died while being treated.

Hill Robinson states in its press release:

The crewmember's next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with the family, friends, and fellow crewmembers at this very difficult time. Hill Robinson and the owners are doing everything possible to support the family and friends and of course an immediate investigation is already underway.

We request the courtesy of privacy for her family and all those affected.

No further statements will be issued until the results of the investigation are known.

UPDATE, 3/16: The deceased’s name has been confirmed as Bethany Smith, who was 18 years old. Her family has set up a GoFundMe page for travel and funeral costs.

  • A truly sad occurrence. My condolences to family and friends.
A tragic reminder to all about crew safety. Though I wasn't there, and I don't know all the factsi can say with certainty there's no excuse for this type "accident".

Ropes don't just somehow come untied, especially safety lines holding crew up the mast. There are safety protocols that that if followed prevent this very sort of thing from ever happening.
Sad, truly sad indeed. And infuriating at the same time.
Again, condolences to family and friends for their loss.
