The 50-meter M/Y SeaQuest, owned by the family of the U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, suffered damage when someone reportedly untied the boat Sunday and sent it adrift on Lake Huron, Ohio, with the crew on board, The Washington Post reports.

A crewmember called police to report that he and the other crewmembers awoke to find the yacht floating away from its mooring at the Huron Boat Basin. The crew was “able to gain control of the ship, but not before it struck the dock with its starboard forward section,” the Huron Police Report stated. The estimated $5,000 to $10,000 damage consists of large scratches and scrapes, according to HuffPost

Chief of Huron Police Department Bob Lippert says it’s unclear if the person who untied the vessel knew who owned SeaQuest. DeVos, who was reportedly not aboard at the time, has been a polarizing political figure since her appointment as Secretary of Education. Nobody was injured during the incident and police are trying to locate surveillance video as they conduct their investigation.

Stay tuned for more information.

  • You sound like a non-yachty or a beginner. It's not uncommon to not have a night watch when the owner or charter guests are not on board, when the yacht is secured to a proper shoreside berth.

The crew was on board and did the best they could to mitigate any damage to the vessel for which they were entrusted.

I have known many crew members from this program, and they are some of the best in the industry.

  • Where was the night watch on a 50M yacht? Maybe they need to invest in some bike locks for their mooring lines? Secretary DeVos this is a pretty clear message people aren't too happy with the job you are doing. Very fortunate it didn't end up in loss of life.
