US crew and Affordable Care Act (ACA) health plans - update

 Permanent link   All Posts

All US citzens/residents (tax payers) are required to have COMPLIANT health insurance by Jan 1 2014 so as not to incur a tax penalty (1% of declared income.)

If you have a current plan you will be able to keep it and not get the tax penalty -at least fore 1 year.

If you have no insurance at all you can apply for Geoblue Navigator (just need to  be out of home country 3 months a year) BY DEC 15, 2013 to defer any tax penalty at least for 1 year!

Hopefully the government will recognize that the compliant domestic plans are of little value to mariners and Expats who spend much of the time out of USA and the situation will change for yacht crew.

If a domestic plan is what you need and you earn under $45, 960 you may qualify for a subsidy and should apply via www.healthcare.gov.   If not, I can help you.
