Hi guys, i am a south-african passport holder.. i am disembarking in Barbados, and flying to Gatwick and transiting through Heathrow to Hungary.. and have valid schengen and also a seaman's discharge book, discharge papers as well! Do i need a UK transit visa for this transit.. as far as all my answers i got is no.. but i would personally want an answer from experienced travelers. Does any one have any Advice?? please help as i am flying back Hungary on the 18th November.. Also i have flight paid and confirmed to return to SA on the 5th December from Hungary! Cheers any info would be highly appreciated.

Yes, you will need a Uk transit visa if you are landing at Gatwick and flying out Heathrow. Go onto the UK Border agency website, it will clear up any questions. Better to have a transit visa then be denied entry at Gatwick.

Agreed. After much research on this topic for travel I also think the answer is yes. Especially since you are changing airports. The only clause I have found not to need a transit visa would be if you aren't leaving the aiport, on the way to the US, and you have a valid B1/B2. Tough to find answers.

Hello Fellow South African

I know that we unfortunately DO need a transit visa to fly through London even if you are transiting within the same terminal and only for even a few min you need a visa. I avoid flying through the UK at all times. There always seems to be confusion on this matter.

All the best and Good luck

SA is covered under the DATV section of countries. The UKBA website says you MAY transit airside without a visa provided you have a confirmed onward ticket less than 24 hrs. You will not go through immigration control, so changing of airports has just voided that for you. Visa processing times are long (3 weeks).

Dear F, SA is not under the DATV section. If you read the fine print correctly that list is for countries that are not part of DATV. I made that mistake and HMS Customs explained it to me with reference to the website

Hi, I'm Hungarian, so more or less I know how to get there. Next time You should do that through Frankfurt, Vienna, Munich, Amsterdam. All those airports are big enough, so You can get there easy from anywhere, all are in the Schengen zone, and from any of them there are two/three flights daily to Budapest. What are You doing in Hungary? :)
