Couple new to yachting

hi all, I'm a 31 year old female with a hospitality background. My husband, the same age, and me are looking to enter the yachting industry hopefully as stew and mate. We want to be on the same boat for obvious reasons - is this possible? Do yachts hire couples commonly? I've seen a few team positions on the job listings here, but I'm not sure where couples stand. Is it more likely we'd be hire separately? If any couples have been hired together we'd appreciate some tips!

Hi Jenn,

Depending on the amount of experience your husband has, it could be difficult or really difficult.  Getting a job as a couple has never been easy and never will.  There are owners/captains out there who will welcome you with open arms, however these are few and far between.

Be prepared for a long search and disappointment, however keep at it and you will find something.  Being married can help, but hinder as well.  My wife and I, although not married at the time, were lucky and managed to get several positions as a couple.  We were also lucky that we had great references.

Don't give up, but be prepared for starting out separately to get some experience.

Hi Jenn,

As John said it can be difficult but it's certainly getting easier than in the past. It's going to depend on what your partner does. If your both after an interior job then your chances are very slim as most couple jobs are a deck interior combo. At the end of the day the 2 of you may need to consider doing your first year on separate yachts to get the experience and then look for a job together. If your partner is looking for a deck job and gets a ticket such as yachtmaster and you have some special service training then it could improve your chances. It's all about being more competitive than the rest especially when looking for a couples job.

What experience does your husband have for him to be hired as a mate?
