World No Tobacco Day: Make it a Lifelong Habit

May 31 is World No Tobacco Day.  We would be remiss if we did not use this time to remind everyone about the dangers of smoking…and the benefits of quitting immediately.

Smoking damages the blood vessels — even in young people.  A damaged system is much more likely to experience heart attacks, strokes and other cardiovascular diseases. Smoking as few as three to five cigarettes a day increases your risk of heart attack.

Smoking reduces the flow of air into the lungs and leads to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. This happens in both smokers and nonsmokers who are exposed to the smoke.

Smoking causes a high heart rate, narrow blood vessels and low oxygen levels. And, of course, smoking causes cancer. Smoking causes disease in nearly every organ in the body. It is linked to cancer of the mouth, lungs, larynx (voice box), stomach, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, bladder and even cervix.

It’s never too late to quit. Quitting smoking brings immediate health benefits, in addition to the long-term benefits.

•    After 20 minutes without a cigarette, blood pressure and pulse drop to normal.
•    After 12 hours without a cigarette, carbon monoxide levels in blood drop to normal.
•    After one day without a cigarette, sense of taste and smell return.
•    After one month without a cigarette, energy levels increase and skin tone improves.
•    After six months without a cigarette, people experience fewer colds and respiratory infections.
•    After one year without a cigarette, heart disease risk drops to half that of a smoker.
•    After five to fifteen years without a cigarette, the risk of stroke is as low as a non-smoker.
•    After fifteen years without a cigarette, heart disease risk is as low as a non-smoker.

well that's true: I quit smoking just five years ago and my breathing and many other vital functions have improved significantly ! Just motivation needed.. and maybe patches, then go for it !

You can do whatever you set your mind to do!! To help stop smoking don't say you "QUIT", just say you "STOPPED" for a while. I know many who have stopped for over 10 years and don't even want one while drinking with others, while the others are smoking. It is tough to kiss someone who has been smoking... Good luck out there stopping, just look at the money you save for better things, like license upgrades...your own vessel....retire early???
