Bugsy Drake's tips and tricks to mastering budget-friendly tablescapes.
One of the BIG misconceptions about tablescaping, especially on yachts, is that everything needs to be brand name or ultra-expensive. This is far from the truth. A splash of creativity and a few charming treasures can turn any setting into something spectacular. Although most owners might have expensive tastes, don’t shy away from mixing some high-end items with budget-friendly decor. If done correctly, you can create an incredible aesthetic.
Essential items to keep on hand
Tablecloths and runners: Invest in neutral tablecloths and different-colored runners, which form the foundation of your tablescape. I always have a black and a white tablecloth on board, as they are the perfect starting points for various themes. Plus, a selection of runners — whether bought on sale or from thrift shops — adds versatility. You can also get creative with your table runner. Consider using old newspapers for a vintage look, butcher paper with crayons for an interactive element for children or leaves gathered ashore for a rustic touch. These options not only save money but also add extra character to your table.
Napkins: Cloth napkins are reusable and can be transformed with different folds or accessories. For instance, a red napkin can look entirely different when folded into a fan or pulled through a napkin ring.
Reversible place mats: Due to limited storage, you can get two colors out of one place mat, which is also cost-effective. Another way I like to repurpose place mats to look different is by taking a square place mat and angling it in the shape of a diamond.
Tableware: Opt for versatile, neutral plates and utensils that can be mixed and matched with different themes. I keep a collection of black plates as well as elegant white plates on board, along with metallic utensils that don’t have to be costly. Glassware should also be basic but adaptable to any theme.
Decor: The centerpiece is crucial for creating a focal point. Whether it’s flowers, candles or decorative objects, it should be eye-catching and tell a story. I love incorporating elements from nature or thrift store finds, such as seashells or local foliage, which add a personal touch and spark conversation.
Fun items you can repurpose from around the yacht
Books: Stacked on top of each other, they make a creative centerpiece for an explorer theme.
Old charts that the captain no longer uses: These can be laid out across the table as a runner or tablecloth. It can be for a nautical or sailor theme, or even translates when the charts are burnt at the edges and stained with an old tea bag for a pirate theme.
Pasta and fresh items from the galley: Have a chat with your chef and grab different styles of pasta to either scatter across the table or use in little glass jars for an Italian theme. Mix the pasta pieces in with some lemons or limes, a touch of greenery and a couple of red roses and you have the perfect formula for a table set right out of Capri!
Old corks from the guest wine: Repurpose your corks by either using them as decorations on the table or as place card holders at each setting. Write each guest’s name on a cork and place it at the designated seat. I also love to save the bottles from the guests’ favorite wines, and with pillar candles use them as unique candle holders. If the wind is too strong, I would instead fill the bottles with battery-operated fairy lights for a lovely warm glow. These add a personal touch when guests recognize the labels.
Things to avoid
Single-use items: Look for items that can be repurposed and used time and time again for different themes.
Tall items: Remember that when you set the table, guests still need to look across at each other to enjoy conversation. High objects get in the way.
