For the third year, Seahub Yacht Management Software has opened the nomination period for its Seahub Engineering Grant for 2024. Any engineer who has gone above and beyond or shown a commitment to advancing their career and/or role is eligible for the grant.

Nominations will be accepted until August 31, and the winner will be chosen the week of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.

The grant winner will receive $3,000 toward engineering courses and study; access to Seahub’s database of OEM manuals and technical data sheets; a Seahub license and Kick Start account setup and data entry; and two tickets to Superyacht Technology Show in Palma.

Last year’s grant was awarded to Jaco Esterhuizen, who was selected from more than 70 nominations. Jaco joined yachting as a deckhand but knew from the start he wanted to be in the engine room. Chief Engineer Michael Doyle taught him about the systems on board the 62-meter motor yacht and nominated Jaco for the grant.

“The process of reviewing nominations is something we collectively enjoy doing. We receive a lot of nominations from people who have been positively impacted by a person who is also the engineer on board,” says Sam Wheaton, commercial director and co-founder of Seahub. “The influence of a positive mentor on board, especially for junior or green crew, can have a big impact on how they approach their job, future jobs and people around them.”

Part of the grant awards the winner with mentorship from Seahub for as long as the crew member desires, allowing the engineer to receive another opinion for situations on board.

“We have remained close to previous winners of the grant. Conversations can vary from where to source parts to which contractors they should use,” Sam shares. “It's an enjoyable part of the grant we get a kick out of providing.”
