Bosun Ramesh Rushantha Silva
Yacht: My Brother Brancusi
Time in industry: 15 years
Time in current position: six months
Previous vessels: Amevi, Parana
Nationality: Sri Lankan

My journey into yachting began after working in various roles, including a stint as a porter at a hotel. In 2005, I left Sri Lanka for the merchant navy. After a few years, I joined as a deck rating on commercial vessels, eventually advancing to senior deckhand on private yachts.

If I hadn’t joined the yachting industry, I would have pursued a career as a musician. I began my musical journey as a percussionist with The Kreators, a band I co-founded in my teens. Our fusion of ethnic and rock influences gained us local recognition, particularly with our hit Sri Lankan Mix.

My primary goal on board is to bring glory to my country, Sri Lanka. After my retirement from yachting, I aspire to join a marina or yacht agency. Ultimately, I aim to leave a positive impact on the yachting community while fostering opportunities for future generations.

One of the most significant lessons I’ve learned is the importance of discipline and adaptability. This industry not only requires technical skills but also the capacity to work under demanding conditions, which often include long hours and limited resources. Success hinges on resilience, a positive attitude and professionalism. Embracing these qualities has been crucial for my growth.

My most significant achievement has been thriving on multinational cruises. It’s essential to build positive relationships and embrace the diversity of accents, languages and cultures on board. Success in any career isn’t just about titles; it’s about connecting well with people. Winning respect and building trust with colleagues creates a supportive environment,  key to a fulfilling life at sea.

One of my best deck tips is to maintain organization by keeping gear ready for quick access. This includes securing ropes, cleaning as you go and knowing where essential tools are stored. Preparedness enhances safety and efficiency, leaving a positive impression on senior crew and guests. Regularly polishing stainless steel and promptly wiping surfaces after exposure to seawater helps prevent corrosion.
