Imray has announced it will cease publishing paper charts by the end of 2025. This decision reflects the growing industry shift toward digital navigation tools and the declining demand for traditional paper products.
The company, which has been producing charts for more than 200 years, will continue to support its charts through Notices to Mariners updates until the end of 2025. Beyond that, no new editions will be published. Imray will focus its efforts on its pilot books, cruising guides, and digital navigation product, Explore with Imray.
“This marks the end of an era but also allows us to focus on the future,” said Lucy Wilson, Managing Director of Imray. “We will continue to provide our customers with high-quality navigation resources in the formats most in demand.”
Imray’s charts are widely used in the leisure sector and are approved by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). Their withdrawal follows a broader trend in the industry. While the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) had initially proposed ceasing paper chart production by 2026, it has since delayed that timeline, citing ongoing demand from specific users.
Despite advancements in electronic navigation, experts emphasize the continued relevance of paper charts. The Royal Yachting Association’s Richard Falk advised mariners to retain a strong understanding of both traditional and digital navigation techniques.
Imray has indicated that there is an opportunity for potential buyers to acquire the chart business and continue its legacy within the global market.
Superyacht captains and crew relying on paper charts are advised to plan accordingly as the industry moves toward digital solutions.
