Q&A with Stew Kim Pinkowski

Time in industry: 18 months
Time in current position: three months
Previous vessel: S/Y Fidelis
Nationality: British

I knew from the age of 15 that I wanted to join yachting, so while still finishing my university degree, I enrolled in Madison Jay’s Shore to Sea program, which provided training for greenies. I secured a job within a month, all from my home in the UK. It’s been an incredible journey, and my first vessel proved to be the perfect fit with an amazing crew.

My goal isn’t necessarily to climb to the highest ranks, although that might change in the future. For now, I aim to continually advance my knowledge and skill set.

I absolutely love my job and this industry! The unique and sometimes crazy experiences are unparalleled, and I get to meet amazing people from all around the world.

One of my first memorable experiences was joining the boat in the Middle East and exploring Petra in Jordan with the crew. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I’ll cherish forever.

During peak season, finding time for self-care is incredibly difficult. The 15- to 17-hour workdays with sometimes no breaks or days off for months can take a toll. This year, I’ve made a conscious effort to focus on my health. I set alarms to remind myself to drink water, which might sound silly but is easy to forget when constantly busy. I also do small workouts in my cabin to keep my energy levels up and my mind focused. Additionally, I seize any opportunity to sit outside in the sun, even if just for a few minutes, since working in the interior means I rarely get to enjoy the outdoors. These small changes have made a big difference, helping me stay resilient and perform at my best.

For those looking to get started: when dockwalking, don’t skip the sailboats. Many people gravitate towards motor yachts, but being on a sailboat has been the best introduction to yachting for me. You can’t knock it until you try it!

Be proactive. If you want something, you have to put in the work to get there. Do your research, step outside your comfort zone and go the extra mile.

Best stew tip: elevate and ice your feet after a busy day. Your feet will thank you!
