The Miami-Dade Fire Department (MDFR) received the call at 3:34 a.m. on Friday, March 7, about three vessels on fire along the Miami River, reportedly across from Jones Boat Yard east of the airport. More than 30 units were dispatched to assist.
Firefighting efforts were made from land and water, and local media CBS News Miami reports MDFR states it was two 60-foot yachts and a 90-foot yacht. MDFR declared the fire under control by 6:30 a.m. but kept units on the scene after to contain fuel runoff and minimize environmental impact of firefighting in the water.
Hours after the fire was out, one vessel had sunk, one had a bit of the bow remaining above water, and the largest yacht destroyed from the midship to stern by the fire.
There were no reported injuries, and the cause is under investigation. According to NBC Miami, authorities say they are investigating it as an act of arson.
