Yacht Explodes at Sea

According to local reports, 31-meter M/Y UN1K caught fire and exploded offPenang, Malaysia, on September 16.

The three crewmembers on board were treated for injuries atSultanah Bahiyah Hospital; according to local news source AsiaOne, Jaroslav Horejsek fractured his right leg, and Novak Novakovik andRudolf Kolic sustained minor bruises. A fourth person, Lucas Bondezan, wasreported missing.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) reportedlyreceived a satellite distress call at 12:05 a.m. on September 16 and sent twovessels out, but their efforts met rough and dark seas. A fishing boat rescuedthe three injured victims about 38 miles from Kuala Kedah, according to AsiaOne.

The search and rescue operation for Bondezan began onSeptember 16, but has been hampered by bad weather, according to MMEA NorthernRegion Maritime Director First Admiral Tan Kwon Kee in NewStraits Times Online. Dockwalkhas reached out to the MMEA for an update, but has yet to receive a response.

Tan told Asia One technical problems in the engine roomcaused the fire.
