Effective 23 December 2024, amendments to the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC, 2006) will require all yachts to provide personal protective equipment (PPE) in sizes that appropriately fit their crew. This regulation addresses a critical safety issue, particularly for women seafarers and smaller-framed individuals, who often struggle with oversized PPE.

The amendment stems from growing awareness of workplace hazards linked to ill-fitting protective equipment, such as loose-fitting gloves, helmets, or protective clothing. Improperly sized equipment can hinder movement, reduce dexterity, and pose additional risks when working in confined spaces or near machinery.

The new requirement applies to all yachts engaged in international voyages or operating outside sheltered waters of their flag state. Owners and managers are advised to conduct a review of their current PPE inventories and procurement practices to ensure compliance. This includes items such as protective clothing, helmets, gloves, and harnesses, which must be available in sizes suitable for all crew members.

Training should also be provided to ensure crew members understand how to select and use PPE correctly.
