Captain Kelly Gordon has announced the launch of Yachtie Minds Matter (YMM), a new nonprofit dedicated to supporting yacht crew and shoreside staff with mental health resources.
Announced at this year’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, the initiative takes a significant step toward ensuring essential mental health support is available industry-wide, including funding for therapy and Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certification.
Captain Kelly, who also serves as one of Dockwalk’s columnists, founded Yachtie Minds Matter to address the concerning trends highlighted in a recent survey she conducted: 46% of respondents reported a decline in mental health since joining the yachting industry, and 67% said it made them consider leaving their careers at sea. Only 34% indicated their workplace offered any mental health support, with many deterred from seeking help due to financial barriers and stigma.
The organisation aims to close this gap by offering therapy funding, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) certification, and awareness campaigns to normalize mental health conversations. YMM also calls on yacht owners and management to prioritize crew well-being.
“Crew members face unique pressures: isolation, long hours, and high-stress environments,” she said. “I reached my lowest before seeking therapy, and it changed my life. I want YMM to offer that same opportunity for others to find support.”
“Yachtie Minds Matter!” she added. “I won’t stop until every seafarer has the right to a safe and supportive environment.”
