As of September 2, 2024, significant changes introduced by authorities in Barcelona mean that any non-EU crew arriving in Barcelona will now require a seaman’s discharge book to be stamped out of the Schengen Zone and onto their vessel.

Employment contracts and letters will no longer be accepted as evidence of seafarer status and stamping out will only be possible with a valid seaman’s discharge book.

Without the correct documentation, non-EU crew joining yachts in Barcelona will not be stamped out and will be subject to regular visa controls, with their permitted days in the Schengen Zone continuing to count down.

This change comes in response to increased yacht traffic entering Barcelona's ports, driven by the arrival of the America's Cup, prompting stricter port controls for crew. The new protocol mirrors a similar measure implemented earlier this year in Palma, Mallorca.

"It’s important to note that while the procedure for stamping out (on board) has changed, the process for stamping in (off) remains unchanged. Crew disembarking must have a valid visa, sufficient funds, and proof of accommodation or onward travel", says yacht agent, Romy Bourguignon, head of ESTELA's Port Vell office in Barcelona.

Non-EU crew members are strongly advised to apply for a seaman’s discharge book immediately to ensure compliance with these new regulations.
